Try It in Your Classroom!

Science Companion and Everyday Mathematics have strong pedagogical links and correlations, and teaching science can strengthen math comprehension.

observingcricketOur authors have annotated a full Science Companion lesson, “Observing Crickets,” from our Grades 1-2 Collecting and Examining Life module for you to explore the connections between Science Companion and Everyday Mathematics with your students and fellow educators. This downloadable file includes the lesson, a skill building activity, and teacher background information.

This lesson demonstrates how science provides a meaningful context for mathematics, and notes where Science Companion lessons use classroom practices similar to those in Everyday Mathematics.

The lesson is one of three in this module in which children closely observe and then compare different animals. In this lesson they observe, measure, and draw crickets, focusing on body parts used for moving, breathing, and seeing.
