(September 20, 2009) Last week, it was announced that Science Companion has been selected as the top core K-5 science curriculum for Washington  schools by the Washington State Office of Public Instruction. In their report, K-12 Science Core/Comprehensive Instructional Materials Final Recommendations, Science Companion placed first among all elementary science curriculum for the state of Washington.

In response to state legislation, submitted curricula were evaluated for their alignment with the revised Washington State K-12 Science Standards and Key Program Elements. Elements evaluated included assessment, equity and accessibility, facilitating instruction, and student learning.

Science Companion received the top rating for elementary science curriculum beyond the following competitors:

  • Experience Science from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
  • FOSS (K-5) from Lawrence Hall of Science/Delta Education
  • Science-Diamond Edition from Scott Foresman Science
  • Science: A Closer Look from MacMillan/McGraw Hill
  • STC from the National Science Resources Center/Carolina Biologicals
Reviewers comments about Science Companion included:

“An emphatic yes. These materials are science based, not language arts based, and would lead to the development of excellent science practitioners. These materials, if taught with fidelity, would lead to many hours of hands-on minds-on exploration for students. Wow!”

“These materials focus on science discovery first with plenty of support to allow students to become more science literate. Students are encouraged to EXPLORE in each module by ‘doing science.’ Were a district to purchase the entire 6 modules for grades 4 and 5, and if I gave adequate time weekly to teach the science, at the end of the 2 years, I would feel as though the students would have tremendous opportunities to develop mastery in many disciplines.”
